Open-when letters, written in real ink.
Open when you miss me. Open when you can’t sleep. Each letter in your words, written with a real pen, sealed in its own envelope and mailed. Postage included for each letter.
What are open-when letters?
A set of sealed letters, each labeled for a moment: open when you miss me, open when you're angry at me, open when you can't sleep, open on your birthday. She keeps the stack and opens one when that moment comes. They are the long-distance gift that keeps giving for months, and the hardest part has always been actually writing and sealing five letters. That part is now typing on your phone.
How to make them with NotAText
- Write each letter as its own order. One letter, one envelope. Put the "Open when…" line as the first line of the letter so it is the first thing she reads.
- Mail them to yourself. Put your own address as the recipient so the stack arrives sealed at your door, then hand it over or tuck it in her bag before the trip. (Or mail each one straight to her, one at a time, when the moment fits.)
- Pick different envelopes so she can tell them apart: white for the happy ones, kraft for the hard ones, cream linen for the big one.
Which letters to write
- Open when you miss me. One specific thing you miss about her and the date you will see each other next.
- Open when you're mad at me. Written now, while you are not fighting. "Whatever I did, I probably did it. Here is what I know is true anyway."
- Open when you can't sleep. Something boring and calm. A story from when you were a kid.
- Open when you need a laugh. The dumbest thing that has happened to you.
- Open on the day you get back. The plan for that day, hour by hour.
Many more, with what to put inside each, are in open-when letter ideas.
Example: open when you miss me

Questions
Can you write “open when” on the envelope?
The envelope carries her address on the front and your return address on the back. Put the “Open when…” line as the first line inside, and use different envelope colors to tell them apart. If you mail them to yourself first, you can label the outside however you like before handing them over.
How many should I write?
Five is the sweet spot. Three is fine. Ten is a lot of typing but she will love it.
Can she open them early?
That is between you two. Most people write “no peeking” and most people peek.
Do they all ship at once?
If you mail them to yourself, yes, each in its own sealed envelope. If you address them to her, each goes out within two business days of its order, so you can space them out by ordering a week apart.
