Say sorry in a way a text can’t.
A handwritten apology letter, written with a real pen and mailed within two business days. What to say, what not to say, and an example you can borrow from.
Why an apology on paper works when a text doesn’t
A text is easy to send, so it is easy to dismiss. A letter took effort to get to her. She can read it when she is ready instead of when her phone buzzes, and she can read it again when she is less angry. It does not interrupt her. It waits.
What goes in an apology letter
- Name what you did. Specifically. "I was wrong to say that about your sister at dinner," not "I'm sorry for what happened."
- Say what it did to her. This is the part men skip. "You went quiet for the rest of the night and I let you."
- No "but." The sentence after the apology is where most apologies die. If you need her to understand your side, that is a different letter, later.
- Say what changes. One concrete thing, not a promise to "be better."
- Leave the door open without pushing. "I'd like to talk when you're ready" and then stop writing.
Example
What not to write
- "I'm sorry you feel that way." That is not an apology.
- Anything that starts with "but" or "to be fair."
- A list of your good qualities.
- An ultimatum, a deadline, or a question she has to answer.
More examples, including after a breakup and after a fight that was partly her fault, are in apology letter examples.
How to send it
Type it on your phone, pick a handwriting (print reads as more sincere than cursive for an apology), pick a paper and envelope, and pay. A real pen writes it and we mail it from Abilene, Texas within two business days, postage included. If you want her to have it faster than USPS, mail it to yourself and hand it to her.
Questions
Should I send a letter or just talk to her?
Talk to her if she will let you. Send the letter if she will not, or if you know you will say it wrong in person. Many people do both: the letter first, the conversation after she has read it.
Should I handwrite an apology or type it?
Handwritten, every time. A typed apology reads like a work email. If your handwriting is the problem, that is what we are for.
How long should an apology letter be?
Shorter than you think. One page. Name what you did, what it did to her, what changes, and stop.
What if she lives with me?
Mail it to your own address and leave it on her pillow, or mail it to her at work. The envelope is half the point.
