Why a paper letter matters on deployment

Wi-Fi is slow, calls are scheduled, and a phone is the thing everyone is staring at. A letter is different. It is read in a bunk, folded into a pocket, read again on a bad day. Ask anyone who has deployed what mail call felt like. We are in Abilene, Texas, home of Dyess Air Force Base; we know what a letter means to someone a long way from here.

What to write to someone deployed

  • Normal life. What the kids said, what broke, what you fixed. Boring is the point. It is what they miss.
  • Nothing that needs an answer right now. Save the decisions for the call.
  • One thing you are proud of them for that is not the deployment.
  • A countdown, if there is one. If there is not, the next good thing on the calendar.

Example

Hey you, The dishwasher died. I know, I know. I watched three videos and fixed it myself and I'm never letting you forget it. Lily asked if you can see the same moon. I said yes. Look at it tonight if you can; she'll be checking. Proud of you for calling your dad last week. I know that was harder than the job. Eighty-eight days. The porch light's on. Me

Military addresses (APO, FPO, DPO)

We mail anywhere USPS delivers in the United States, and APO/FPO/DPO addresses are USPS addresses. Because they are formatted differently from a street address, email us before you order and we will make sure it goes through. For a stateside base address, just type it in; we check it with USPS before you pay.

How it works

Type it on your phone, pick a handwriting, paper and envelope. A real ballpoint pen writes it and we mail it within two business days, postage included. How it works. If you want to send one a week, each is a few minutes: see long-distance letters.

Questions

Can you include a photo?

Yes. The pen traces pictures in outline, so a simple photo with a clear silhouette works best: a kid, a dog, the porch.

How long will it take to get there?

We mail within two business days. USPS transit to a stateside base is two to five days; to an APO/FPO it can be one to three weeks depending on where they are.

Can I write to a service member I don’t know?

This site is for letters to people you know. Programs like Soldiers’ Angels and Operation Gratitude run letters to deployed troops in general.
