How to make a typed letter look handwritten.

Handwriting fonts, tracing, a friend with good handwriting, or a machine with a real pen: what each actually looks like on paper, and which one she will not see through.

There are four ways to turn typed words into a handwritten page. Three of them are visible from a foot away. One is not.

1. A handwriting font (does not work)

Pick a font, print it. From across the room it reads as handwriting. Up close every "e" is identical, the ink sits flat on top of the paper, and there is no pressure. The problem is not that it looks bad; it is that the moment she notices, it reads as a trick. For a letter whose whole point is effort, that is the worst outcome.

2. Print it faint and trace it (works, slowly)

Print the typed letter in a light gray handwriting font, lay it under good paper on a window or a light box, and trace it with a pen. It is real ink and real pressure. It takes about an hour a page, your hand will hurt, and it will still look like you traced it, because tracing is slow and even. Fine for a short note.

3. Ask someone with good handwriting (works)

Your words, their hand. People have done this since letters existed. The letter is real, the ink is real, and if you tell her, it is just help. The limits are finding the person and asking them to copy out a love letter, which is its own conversation.

4. A machine with a real pen (works)

This is what NotAText does. You type the letter on your phone, pick one of 57 handwriting styles recorded from real people, and a writing machine holds a real ballpoint pen and writes it, stroke by stroke, with the small variations a hand makes. Then one person seals it, stamps it and mails it. It is option three with a machine instead of a friend. Postage included. How it works.

Should I tell her?

Yes. For options 3 and 4, the honest version is one sentence: "I typed it, a real pen wrote it, because my handwriting is a crime." That lands as effort, not as a trick. Hiding it is what turns help into a trick. More on that in the machine.

Questions

Is there a free way to make typed text look handwritten?

A handwriting font is free and looks printed up close. Tracing is free and takes an hour a page. Both are fine for a short note; neither will pass for a real letter.

Does the machine use my handwriting?

Not yet. You pick from 57 real hands. Most people pick one close to their own or the one they wish they had.

Can she tell a machine wrote it?

The ink, pressure and variation are real, so not from the page. Tell her anyway; it reads as effort, and it is.
